| The Hype | | | |
The hype surrounding Web Services is incredible. There are hundreds of vendors out there
trying to sell you their products, each claiming to be Silver Bullet for all your
application integration problems. Who do you believe? Which one should you buy? What do all
the acronyms mean? SOAP, XML-RPC, WSDL, UDDI? Why should you care about any of these?

| The Reality | | | |
|
As always, the truth lies somewhere in between. While certainly not a Silver Bullet, Web Services
are an important set of basic protocols and technologies which can serve as the basis for new and
interesting applications. The alphabet soup of Web Services protocols and acronyms are really just the basic building blocks,
and software developers will need to use those, along with solid design methodologies and architectures,
to create applications which can interact with each other in novel ways.
